Tarragona province recorded 14 road deaths in the first five months of 2026, down 18% from 17 in the same period last year, according to the Servei Català de Trànsit.
But the wider picture is less positive. The total number of people affected in road accidents rose to 780 by 31 May, up 19.4% year on year, while accidents involving casualties increased by 13.4%.
Fatal accidents also fell, from 17 to 13, a drop of 23.5%. Even so, Tarragona led the Catalan provinces for growth in total accident victims during the period.
Across Catalonia, Tarragona was second for road deaths, behind Barcelona with 25. Girona recorded seven deaths and Lleida six. For readers following wider regional coverage, see our news page.
Within Tarragona, Tarragonès was the comarca with the highest toll, with five deaths, up 150% from the previous year. Baix Camp, Baix Penedès, Montsià and Ribera d'Ebre had not recorded any road deaths so far this year.
The N-340 and N-240 were identified as the most dangerous roads in the province, with three and two deaths respectively. Head-on collisions also rose, from two fatal crashes to five in a year.
The Servei Català de Trànsit is expected to continue analysing the causes behind the rise in casualties and minor injuries, as authorities assess whether further safety measures or awareness campaigns are needed.
