Tarragona City Council has voiced concern after Dow announced 138 job cuts in Spain, with most of them affecting the northern industrial park in Tarragona. Mayor Rubén Viñuales said on Thursday that the news “generates uncertainty and unease for many families in the city”.
Viñuales said the redundancies have a direct human impact, adding that “behind every job there is a life project, a personal effort, and a contribution to the economic and social development of Tarragona and the entire territory”, according to Diari de Tarragona.
The council says it will look at “all possible avenues” to reduce the number of redundancies. Its aim is to support affected workers and their families, while also limiting the wider economic impact on Tarragona and the surrounding area.
The chemical sector is a major employer in Tarragona, and large job cuts can affect local businesses and services as well as industrial activity. The city council’s response reflects the importance of the northern industrial park to the local economy.
