Parents in Tarragona have filed a complaint with the Síndic de Greuges de Catalunya after their son was injured in an accident at Escola SOLC on 28 April. The school is on the La Laboral Educational Campus.

According to the family, their son has severe autism spectrum disorder and an intellectual disability. They say he suffered a significant arm injury in an incident involving a window at the centre and was taken to Joan XXIII Hospital. The parents say they have repeatedly asked for safety measures to adapt the building’s glass, which they believe does not meet current rules. The building is owned by the Department of Education.

The family says it has not received an effective response or concrete solutions. They also criticise a lack of coordination between school staff and the administration, which they say has left the issue unresolved. For background on the office they have approached, see the news tag page and the Síndic de Greuges de Catalunya.

After the accident, the young person stayed at home to recover until mid-May, then returned to school gradually. His parents say the return has been difficult because his routines were disrupted and no changes have been made to make the spaces safer.

They say his educational activity has been limited, with his time largely restricted to his classroom, and that this is affecting his adaptation and could affect his mental health. The parents have asked the Síndic de Greuges of Catalonia to intervene and press the relevant administrations to act quickly.

The Todos En Azul association has backed the family. It says similar situations could happen in other special education centres in the area and points to possible maintenance problems and safety rule breaches. More on the school system can be found through the Department of Education.
