Tarragona will restore the historic sea entrance to its Roman Amphitheatre, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the city’s most emblematic Roman monuments. The work is intended to improve access for visitors and is part of a wider programme of heritage restoration across the city.

Local officials say the Amphitheatre needs a full overhaul, with the first stage focused on improving access to the arena itself. The sea entrance is expected to help visitors experience the site in a way that reflects its original use.

The Amphitheatre work follows major restoration efforts at the Roman Circus and the Praetorium. Recovery work at the Colonial Forum is also nearly complete, showing the scale of the city’s ongoing programme.

Tarragona has been working systematically through its Roman heritage sites, with the aim of preserving them and improving the visitor experience. The Amphitheatre is considered the most emblematic monument of Roman Tarraco.
