Public education centres in Sant Cugat del Vallès will experience a strike on Tuesday, 12 May, called by several unions, including USTEC, Professors de Secundària, CGT, and Intersindical. The action opposes an agreement signed by the Department of Education with CCOO and UGT.
This strike is part of a series of stoppages planned across Catalonia and the Vallès Occidental region between May and June. In response, the Generalitat and Sant Cugat City Council have mandated minimum services for public education centres and municipal facilities to ensure basic student care.
For public and state-subsidised centres, the Generalitat has set specific minimum service requirements. Sant Cugat City Council has also approved minimum services for municipal facilities.
The unions organising the strike describe the agreement between the Department of Education, CCOO, and UGT as "insufficient". They are demanding a "deep and immediate rectification" from the government. Their key demands include restoring teachers' purchasing power, improving salaries, reducing classroom ratios, increasing staff numbers, lessening bureaucratic burdens in schools, and reviewing educational curricula.
Unions Reject Police Presence in Schools
The unions also oppose a pilot plan by the Department of Education that would place Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, in schools for support and prevention tasks. They view this measure as "punitive" and argue that school conflicts should be addressed through an educational, not a policing, approach.
Public schools and institutes in Sant Cugat have scheduled these strike days. Municipal nursery schools also have specific stoppages planned. Further details on the exact minimum service levels for each type of institution are expected to be communicated to affected families and staff.
