Residents and workers in Sabadell, Vallès Occidental, are set to benefit from two consecutive long weekends in May, according to the 2026 labour calendar for Catalonia. These non-working days offer a welcome break before the summer holidays, especially for those who can arrange additional time off.

These upcoming holidays follow the Easter period and provide opportunities for extended rest. The first long weekend arrives next week, with the second following immediately after, offering a chance for a 'super long weekend' for some.

May Day Long Weekend

The first public holiday is on Friday, 1 May, marking International Workers' Day across Spain. This ensures a three-day weekend for many. Additionally, Thursday, 30 April, is a free disposition day for all educational centres in Sabadell, as approved by the Municipal School Council. This allows families and workers to create a four-day break by taking Thursday off, or by requesting Monday, 4 May, as a holiday.

International Workers' Day commemorates the achievements of the labour movement and workers' rights. Its origins trace back to a trade union strike in Chicago, Illinois, in 1886.

Aplec de la Salut Celebrations

Following this, Sabadell residents will have another long weekend. Monday, 11 May, is a local holiday for the Aplec de la Salut, considered the city's second main festival. This observance always falls on the Monday after the second Sunday in May.

To maximise this non-working day, individuals can request Tuesday, 12 May, or Friday, 8 May, off, creating another extended break. The Aplec de la Salut honours the city's patron saint, the Mare de Déu de la Salut, with traditional and religious activities primarily centred around the Ermita de la Salut.

Summer 'Super Long Weekend' Possibility

After 11 May, Sabadell will not have any more local holidays for the month. However, those who work or study outside the municipality should check their local calendars for additional non-working days, using the online search tool provided by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The next regional holiday is Sant Joan, on 24 June. This year, Sant Joan falls on a Wednesday, presenting an opportunity for a five-day 'super long weekend' for those who can take extra days off. By taking Monday, 22 June, and Tuesday, 23 June, or Thursday, 25 June, and Friday, 26 June, individuals can combine the public holiday with the surrounding weekend.

Sant Joan commemorates the birth of Saint John the Baptist and roughly coincides with the summer solstice, marking the longest day and shortest night of the year.
