Sabadell is set for a major courthouse upgrade, as the Ministry of Justice and Democratic Quality has started a €4 million renovation of the Sabadell courthouse in Barcelona province.
According to a departmental statement, Justice Minister Ramon Espadaler met on Friday with Patricia Brotons, president of the Sabadell Court of First Instance, and legal professionals to set out the plans. The ministry says this is the most important reform at the building so far.
The first phase of works is expected to run until the end of 2028. The project focuses on functionality, security and energy efficiency, with changes aimed at both citizens and legal staff.
Planned improvements include a larger Guard Service area, which will grow by 129% from 99 square metres to 227 square metres, and a main lobby that will be expanded by 50% and fully remodelled. Eight new courtrooms will be created and placed on the lower floors, while a new courtroom for large trials will be built on level -1.
The Civil Registry will also be fully remodelled, with ergonomic furniture and biophilic design elements. The ministry says the aim is to create a more accessible and humane space. Espadaler also said the project takes a conscious and kinder approach to victim care, waiting rooms, segregated circuits for victims and perpetrators, and a better environment for workers.
Security upgrades will include new fire protection measures and a new emergency exit. Energy work will see lighting gradually replaced with LED lights. In parallel, the Violence Against Women section is due for a full renovation during 2026, with a reconfigured layout, a new waiting room for victims, interview rooms and a multi-purpose room with direct access to the detainee circuit, at a budget of €83,000.
The ministry added that some modernisation work was already completed in the third quarter of 2024, including upgrades to the air conditioning and ventilation system, adaptations to the 15th floor for the Public Prosecutor's Office, the 7th floor for technical teams and the administrative unit, and a full replacement of the building's lifts.
