In Lleida, prosecutors are seeking prison terms of up to 19 and a half years for a father and son accused of killing a man in a Mollerussa bar in November 2022. The case, which also left two of the victim’s brothers seriously injured, is due to go before the Audiencia de Lleida on 12 June.

The public prosecutor says six people will face trial, with charges ranging from homicide to assault and participation in a tumultuous fight. The prosecution is also asking for more than €350,000 in compensation for the victim’s family and for the injured parties.

According to the provisional conclusions, the incident happened on the evening of 22 November 2022 at the Beethoven bar in Mollerussa, in Pla d’Urgell. The prosecution says two rival families from Miralcamp and El Palau d’Anglesola were at the bar, and that a domestic violence hearing involving relatives was due the next day at the Lleida Juvenile Court.

The prosecutor alleges that one of the accused called other relatives after seeing members of the rival family in the bar. An argument began around 8.38pm and escalated after the victim hit one of the defendants on the head with a bottle. The prosecution says the father and son then attacked the man with a knife or blade, shouting for him to be killed and stabbed.

The victim, aged 35, died around 9.55pm from hypovolemic shock. The prosecution also says two of his brothers were injured in the confrontation, one with stab wounds to the back that punctured a lung, and another with at least four stab wounds to the chest area. Another defendant is accused of hitting one of the injured men with a plate. The investigation has not confirmed that the victim’s brothers carried knives or blades.

For the main accused, prosecutors are seeking 19 and a half years in prison, made up of 12 years for completed homicide, 7 years for attempted homicide, or alternatively 4 years for assault with a dangerous instrument, plus 6 months for participation in a tumultuous fight. For the other accused directly involved in the fatal stabbing, the request is for 16 and a half years. A third defendant faces a request for 7 years, or alternatively 4 years, plus 6 months, while two others face six months each for participation in the fight and one of them also faces a two-month fine for minor assault.

The prosecution is also seeking civil compensation, including €120,000 for the widow, €40,000 for each of the four minor children, €25,000 each for the victim’s father and two brothers, and smaller sums for the other injured people. The two main accused have been in provisional prison since 26 November 2022, with that measure extended on 23 October 2024. The trial is set to run on 12 June, with 15, 16, 17 and 18 June reserved for the hearing.
