Reus residents are pressing the city council over noise from large events in Plaça de la Llibertat, in the centre of the city. More than 200 people, through a local platform, say the square has become overloaded with mass events and that the situation has gone on for too long.

The residents say the problem is not only noise. They also point to maintenance issues in the square, including planters, streetlights, paving and seating areas. One resident said, in Catalan, that “the glass has long overflowed”, meaning the situation has reached breaking point.

The complaints have been raised with Reus City Council officials, who have been told that too many noisy events are being concentrated in one residential area without enough control. The residents want a better balance between public activity and day-to-day life for people living nearby.

In response, the council has started measuring the sound impact of events. It also plans to decentralise the festive calendar, so some activities can be moved to other parts of Reus. That approach is meant to reduce pressure on Plaça de la Llibertat and spread events more evenly across the city.

The issue sits within a wider local debate about how Catalan towns manage public events in central squares. For more local coverage, see our news page and related reporting on community issues.
