Barcelona and the Catalan government have launched several new rent aid programmes for 2026, offering financial support to various groups including young people, single-parent families, and individuals over 55.
These initiatives aim to help residents manage housing costs, which remain a challenge despite a slight downward trend in rental prices, according to betevé. The Spanish government's new rental price index, effective since 2024, also seeks to limit price increases.
One programme, offered by the Generalitat de Catalunya, provides up to €250 per month for two years to young people aged 35 or under. The application period for this aid closed on 13 March 2026, with a budget of €29 million funded by state resources. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible applicants.
Barcelona City Council's Targeted Support
The Barcelona City Council has activated a new aid programme for 2026, offering up to €400 per month for specific groups. This includes individuals over 55 living alone and single-parent families with a valid title. Applications for this support opened on 20 February and will close on 21 March 2026, 30 calendar days after the call's publication. The monthly amount ranges from €20 to €400, depending on the case, and is available for a maximum of 12 months.
Additionally, the City Council offers ongoing aid for emergency situations and homelessness, which can be requested at any time through Barcelona's Housing Offices or the Virtual Procedures Office. This support is for cases assessed by the emergency situations evaluation board.
Aid for Vulnerable Groups and Urgent Cases
The Generalitat de Catalunya also provides support for older residents. A subsidy of up to €200 per month is available for individuals over 65 at risk of social exclusion. The application period for this specific aid has not yet opened but will be announced soon. The monthly amount will range from €20 to €200.
Another Generalitat programme targets individuals aged 36 to 64 who are at risk of social exclusion, offering between €20 and €200 per month. The application deadline for this aid has been extended until 8 May. Applications for both Generalitat programmes can be submitted online via the Generalitat's procedures portal or in person at local housing offices.
For urgent housing situations, the Generalitat has a line of aid designed to ensure applicants can remain in their homes. These non-repayable grants can be requested at any time through the Generalitat's procedures portal. The Barcelona City Council also offers aid to help pay off rental debts, aiming to prevent home repossessions or social exclusion due to loss of primary residence. This can be applied for at any time through the Housing Offices or the Virtual Procedures Office in Barcelona.
