R3 Rodalies services between Ripoll and Ribes de Freser in Girona province were halted on Saturday morning after a copper theft caused a loss of tension in the catenary, according to Renfe. One train was left stopped on the tracks.
Replacement bus services were set up to carry passengers between the two affected stations. Protecció Civil activated the pre-alert phase of the Ferrocat plan in response to the incident.
The disruption adds to ongoing pressure on rail users in Catalonia, where thefts from railway infrastructure can quickly affect commuter services and create safety risks. For wider rail updates, see our news coverage.
In a separate incident, the R11 Rodalies line between Figueres and Portbou was also cut on Saturday morning after a train stopped because of a lack of tension in the catenary, Renfe said. Road transport was being organised for passengers on that route too.
Rail infrastructure theft remains a recurring problem in Catalonia, with service interruptions and repair work often following these incidents. Renfe and Protecció Civil were the sources cited for the disruptions reported on Saturday.
