Durro, in Alta Ribagorça, has marked the start of the Pyrenean fire festival season with its traditional Falles celebration. Around 200 people took part, according to local reports.
This year’s event also marks 10 years since the Falles of the Pyrenees were recognised by UNESCO. The listing is part of UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Falles are ancestral fire festivals held in several towns across the Pyrenees. They usually involve young men carrying flaming torches, known as falles, down from the mountains to a village bonfire in the square.
The tradition is linked to community renewal and to the preservation of local heritage. It also draws visitors to the region, alongside local participation.
Other Pyrenean towns are expected to hold their own Falles celebrations through the summer. For more local coverage, see our news page.
