Year-Round Service Launches 13 October
A new regular bus line connecting El Pont de Suert and Vielha will begin operating on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The service, introduced by the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat de Catalunya, aims to improve mobility for residents of Alta Ribagorça and Val d’Aran, particularly young people seeking post-compulsory education. Operated by ALSA, the line will run four return trips per day from Monday to Friday throughout the year. The first bus will depart El Pont de Suert at 7:00 and arrive in Vielha before 8:00, while the last return journey will leave Vielha at 18:15. Stops include El Pont de Suert, Les Bordes junction, Vilaller, Senet-Aneto junction, the Vielha Institute and Vielha’s central stop.
Boost for Education and Rural Retention
The new connection responds to a joint demand from both regions to strengthen transport links. Albert Palacín, president of the Alta Ribagorça County Council, said the service marks progress in regional mobility, supporting access to education, employment, healthcare and social services. He noted the council has worked since late 2023 to improve public transport, with timetables aligned to school hours to support student travel. Palacín stressed the importance of connectivity in countering depopulation and retaining talent in mountain areas.
If we want a living Pyrenees, it must be connected.
Jordi Mas, territorial director of the Department of Territory in the Alt Pirineu and Aran, said the service is part of a broader transport improvement plan developed with local councils to meet real community needs.
Expanding Opportunities for Young People
Àngela Cases Andreu, knowledge councillor at the Conselh Generau d’Aran, said the two regions jointly requested the link about a year ago. Until now, Aranese students could travel to study in El Pont de Suert, but no equivalent option existed for Alta Ribagorça youth wishing to attend post-compulsory courses in Vielha. The new service opens access to training cycles at the Vielha Institute and the School of Hospitality. Cases Andreu emphasized that mountain communities must offer full educational opportunities despite geographic challenges. Carlota Valls, territorial director of Education in the Alt Pirineu and Aran, highlighted that reliable transport is key to expanding vocational and post-compulsory education offerings. She noted that without guaranteed mobility, schools cannot attract enough students to justify new courses.
Mobility opens the door for us to plan growth in training provision in the Pyrenees and Aran in the coming years.
Valls added that while the Department of Education covers school transport for compulsory education, it does not do so for post-compulsory levels, making inter-departmental collaboration essential.
Investment and Future Mobility Plans
The new bus line represents an estimated annual investment of €125,000 and forms part of the Road Public Transport Improvement Study for Alta Ribagorça, developed by the Department of Territory with the county council and municipalities. The study is based on mobility patterns of the region’s 4,051 residents, who make an average of 3.54 trips per person daily. Currently, only 4.6% of travel is done via public transport. This improvement is part of a wider €1.25 million annual investment package in regional transport, up from €708,000, which already includes a school-linked service between Tremp and El Pont de Suert launched in September 2025. Residents and students can find timetables and route details via the ALSA Moovit app page for El Pont de Suert.
