A 59-year-old French resident of La Ràpita died in a motorcycle crash on the T-2021 road, near the town in the Terres de l'Ebre, early on 6 June 2026. The route links Poblenou del Delta and La Ràpita and is widely known locally as the Road of Shame because of its safety record.
The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the crash, which happened at kilometre 1 of the road. It is the first road death recorded in Catalonia in June, and the sixth motorcyclist death in Tarragona province this year, according to the Catalan Traffic Service, Servei Català de Trànsit.
Residents and road users have long complained about the T-2021, citing narrow sections, a lack of proper verges, and its proximity to Delta canals. Those concerns have helped give the road its informal name.
Work to improve the road is already under way. The Diputació de Tarragona began a full renovation project in April to widen the road and improve safety, after the scheme was tendered and awarded earlier in 2026.
Since January 2024, the T-2021 has seen three fatal crashes, with two vehicles ending up in a parallel canal. The latest death brings the total number of road fatalities in Catalonia this year to 22, including 21 official victims and one person who died more than 24 hours after a crash in Tarragona and is not counted in the official tally.
Motorcyclists account for four in every ten road deaths in Catalonia this year, according to the traffic service. It says it is reinforcing measures such as driver training, better route signage and more road checks. For more Catalonia-wide reporting, see our News page.
