Worker killed in Esterri d'Àneu renovation

A 23-year-old man has died after a stone wall collapsed while he was carrying out renovation work on a house in Esterri d'Àneu, in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà, Lleida province. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, 21 August 2026. Emergency services, including the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan regional police), the Generalitat Firefighters, and the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), were mobilised to the scene. Despite the rapid response, the worker could not be saved. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.


Investigation launched

The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Patrols from the Sort police station, along with three units of the Generalitat Firefighters and SEM personnel, responded to the alert. The incident has been reported to the duty investigating court in Tremp and the Department of Business and Labour of the Generalitat de Catalunya, as required by protocol in cases of fatal workplace accidents.

The Mossos have put the facts in the knowledge of the investigating judge in Tremp and the Department of Business and Labour, in accordance with standard procedures for fatal work accidents.

The Ecomuseum of the Valleys of Àneu, based in Esterri d'Àneu, highlights the area's cultural and architectural heritage, including traditional stone buildings. This underscores the importance of safety during the renovation of such structures. No further details about the victim or the property have been released by authorities.
