Montblanc council has granted Bon Preu a construction licence for its new logistics centre at the LOGIS Montblanc industrial estate, allowing the Catalan supermarket group to begin work on a €34 million first phase.

The project will provide Bon Preu’s main distribution platform for Camp de Tarragona, Terres de l’Ebre and Ponent. For Montblanc residents, it brings a major private investment to the new industrial estate and has generated €1.4 million in municipal licence revenue, although the council is subject to restrictions under its financial recovery plan.

According to information from Montblanc council reported by the Catalan News Agency, the first phase consists of two warehouses:

  • a 26,500-square-metre dry-goods warehouse;
  • a 13,600-square-metre fresh-products warehouse; and
  • an overall first-phase construction budget of €34 million.

Bon Preu intends to bring the centre into operation during the first half of 2028. The start is about 18 months later than originally planned, after the processing of the industrial estate’s land readjustment.

Groundworks planned while LOGIS Montblanc is completed

Mayor Marc Vinya said Bon Preu had told the council it wanted to start preparing the land in August. The company is the first business set to begin work at LOGIS Montblanc and will occupy its largest plot.

"From the planning point of view, they have everything in place and can start whenever they wish," Vinya said.

CIMALSA, the body promoting the LOGIS Montblanc development, is expected to finish the estate’s urbanisation works before the end of the year. Ràdio Montblanc reported in July that the council had provisionally approved a second amendment to the partial urban development plan for the La Romiguera Logis Intermodal Montblanc sector after a technical issue in the project plans was resolved.

DiariTots21 reported that the Bon Preu project is expected to create 900 jobs. That figure is an employment estimate reported for the wider project, rather than a recruitment announcement.

Licence income subject to council budget restrictions

The Ajuntament, Montblanc’s town council, has received €1.4 million from the works licence. Vinya said the money could be used for purposes including short-term debt payments and investment, but that the final allocation must comply with the council’s financial recovery plan.

"Receiving €1.5 million does not mean that the council can spend it on whatever it wants. As we are under a financial recovery plan, we have restrictions and must see how it fits," Vinya said.

The mayor said the council expects Bon Preu’s arrival to encourage other companies to buy plots at the estate. Land remains for sale, including a 60,000-square-metre plot, while CIMALSA foresees a future expansion of the industrial estate.
