Manresa, in Central Catalonia, planned three defence towers during the First Carlist War (1833 to 1840) to strengthen its defences, according to Regió 7.

Only two of the towers were built. They were the Santa Isabel fort, on Puigterrà hill, and the Santa Caterina Tower, on the hill of the same name.

The third tower was planned for the La Culla area, but it was never built. Regió 7 reported that the project did not go ahead for unspecified reasons.

The plans underline Manresa’s military role during a period of conflict in the 19th century, and show how the city was viewed as a strategic point at the time.
