Families in Moià, in central Catalonia, are protesting against plans to reduce two public education lines for the next academic year. The proposed cuts would affect both primary and secondary pupils, according to local reports.
The Department of Education plan would remove one of the two 3rd-year primary lines at Josep Orriols i Roca school. It would also reduce the Moianès institute’s 1st-year ESO lines from three to two, affecting pupils now in 6th year of primary who are due to move into secondary school.
The Parents’ Association, or AFA, at Josep Orriols i Roca school has said it strongly opposes the proposal and describes it as a serious setback for public education. The group had already mobilised last year to save an I3 pre-school line.
The AFA has formally complained to the Department of Education and says it will also inform the Síndic de Greuges and the USTEC education union. It has announced an initial protest action for Tuesday.
