A man died after falling approximately 100 metres in the Port de Medacorba area of Alins, in Pallars Sobirà, in the north of Catalonia. Emergency services responded to the incident near the French and Andorran border, but could not save him.
Firefighters received the alert at 3.01pm from a witness who reported the fall and believed the person was dead, according to officials. Because the area was difficult to access, Special Actions Group (GRAE) personnel were deployed with a rescue helicopter from the Aerial Means unit. They found the man's body at the scene.
Firefighters also used the helicopter to rescue the person who raised the alarm and another witness, taking them to a safe location. The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, have taken charge of identifying the victim and carrying out the investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The case is one of several fatal incidents reported in Catalonia's natural areas yesterday. Earlier in the afternoon, firefighters recovered the body of an 18-year-old man who drowned in the Llobregat river at the Ametlla de Merola weir in Berguedà. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful after the body was found.
Separately, a deceased diver was located in Cadaqués, Alt Empordà. The Mossos' Maritime Unit found the body about 10 metres deep. Firefighters also ended the search for a minor who had been missing since Thursday morning in Roses.
In another incident, the GRAE helicopter rescued a hiker who fell in Josa i Tuixent. The hiker's partner reported the accident at 7.29pm while they were on Puig de les Gralleres. For more local reporting across Catalonia, see our news coverage.
