Lleida's city council and the Spanish Ministry of Transport are pushing forward with plans to improve local rail services, including a new stop near the city's hospitals. Mayor Fèlix Larrosa met with Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, in Lleida on 20 April 2026, where Santano announced an imminent feasibility study for the new railway halt.

The proposed stop would serve the city's hospital area, which also includes scientific research centres and the University of Lleida. Santano described the project as a "city project" and a "priority" for the Ministry. The study will be integrated into the ongoing information study for the Zaragoza-Tarragona corridor, saving time that a separate tender process would require. This integration is part of an agreement between the Spanish government and the Junts parliamentary group.

Mayor Larrosa welcomed the initiative, noting the new stop could serve all Lleida Rodalies lines, including the Lleida-Montsó route. He thanked the Secretary for the Ministry's "extended hand" in improving rail services and strengthening connectivity between Lleida and Aragon.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

Larrosa called for joint efforts with the Catalan and Aragon governments to restore "normality" to the high-demand Lleida-Montsó line. He suggested that increasing frequencies to ten services could move around 700,000 people annually, significantly reducing private vehicle use.

Beyond the new stop, Santano also announced that Adif, the Spanish railway infrastructure manager, will tender for an station hotel during the second quarter of this year. The Ministry is also reviewing the opening of the Lleida-Pirineus station's north entrance in Pardinyes, calling it a "functional and necessary" improvement within the urban planning framework. Officials are also looking into fissures reported in some homes in Horta de Lleida.

Institutional Visit and Future Steps

Santano's visit to Lleida also included an institutional reception at the city council, where he signed the Book of Honour and received a copy of the Llibre dels Usatges, a collection of Catalan laws. He also met with Deputy Mayor Begoña Iglesias and councillors Violant Cervera, Maria Antònia Maller, and Laura Bergés.

The next steps involve the swift completion of the feasibility study for the hospital railway stop. This will provide data on real demand, helping to solidify plans for a more sustainable and connected transport network in Lleida and its surrounding areas.
