Lleida’s annual inflation rate fell to 3.4% in May, according to figures published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics, the INE, on 12 June 2026. That was down three-tenths of a point from April’s 3.7% and ended three straight months of increases.

The province was the only one in Catalonia to record a fall in its annual Consumer Price Index in May. Even so, Lleida remained above both the Catalan average of 3.1% and the Spanish average of 3.2%, according to the INE.

The main reason for the slowdown was a drop in housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel prices. That category fell 0.8% over the month, with its annual rate easing from 6.7% to 4.5%. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco also fell 1.3%, while recreational, sports and cultural activities were down 0.8%.

Some costs continued to rise. Transport was up 6.5% year on year, restaurants and accommodation rose 5.1%, and insurance and financial services increased 5.2%. On a monthly basis, the CPI was unchanged in May after rising 0.8% in April.

The biggest monthly increases were in furniture and household items, up 1%, clothing and footwear, up 0.7%, and restaurants and accommodation, up 0.6%. Healthcare services, insurance and financial services, and personal services also posted smaller rises. By contrast, recreational, sports and cultural activities fell 0.8%, information and communications slipped 0.1%, and transport prices were stable.

For the first five months of the year, inflation in Lleida stood at 2.2%. Across Catalonia, the CPI rose by one-tenth of a point to 3.1% in May, while the Spanish rate held at 3.2%, according to the INE. For more Catalonia-wide reporting, see our news page and the INE website for the original data.
