Lleida, Catalonia: Sàhara Ponent is seeking three more host families in Lleida to complete this year’s Vacances en Pau, or Holidays in Peace, programme for Sahrawi children.
The association says the initiative brings children from Algerian refugee camps to the Segrià area for the summer. This June, it has already arranged for three additional children to take part, two with returning host families and one with a family joining the programme for the first time.
Sàhara Ponent describes the project as both solidary and therapeutic. During July and August, the children can take part in leisure activities, receive better nutrition, and get medical attention that is not available in their desert homes.
Sixteen children, aged between 8 and 12, are already confirmed for the programme, with most of them returning participants. The children live as full members of their host families and take part in social and institutional events.
They also become familiar with new customs and languages, and benefit from healthy, balanced meals. General medical care is included, along with specialised treatment if needed.
Sàhara Ponent is continuing its appeal for new families to join so more Sahrawi children can spend the summer away from the harsh conditions of the refugee camps. For more Catalonia news, see our news coverage.
