The Les Garrigues Protected Designation of Origin, based in Lleida, is changing its rules to attract more cooperatives and private companies. The update, approved by the quality label’s assembly and now being finalised with the Department of Agriculture, will allow member cooperatives to produce olive oil under the Les Garrigues PDO label.

It will also let them mill olive varieties that were previously restricted by the PDO, including Koroneiki, according to officials. The aim is to increase the number of producers contributing to certified output and to strengthen the local economy.

Oleotourism push in Cervià de les Garrigues

Cervià de les Garrigues hosted the first olive tree flowering event on Monday. The initiative is part of a wider effort to promote oleotourism and raise public awareness of Les Garrigues olive oil, said PDO president Enric Dalmau.

The PDO plans to open future flowering events to the public. It says this would give visitors a closer look at olive oil production and the area’s farming heritage, while also creating new ways to support the sector.
