Catalan police located twelve Kalashnikov-type assault rifles and a handgun inside a Porsche Cayenne travelling on the AP-7 motorway near Figueres, according to officials. The Mossos d'Esquadra intercepted the vehicle as part of a police operation.
The firearms were concealed within a secret compartment of the car. Officers arrested the two occupants of the vehicle, who were then taken to police facilities for questioning.
Investigation Underway
The two detainees have previous records for crimes against property and drug trafficking. They have since been brought before a judge. The Mossos d'Esquadra have confiscated both the weapons and the vehicle.
Police sources indicate that the seized assault rifles are of Russian origin. Investigators are looking into whether they entered Catalonia via drug trafficking networks or organised crime groups. The investigation remains open to establish the full origin and intended destination of the weapons.
