Junts per Catalunya's president in Barcelona City Council, Jordi Martí, has urged Mayor Jaume Collboni to confront a "serious security crisis" in the city. Martí's call follows a weekend of violent incidents, including stabbings, in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.
Martí, who leads the opposition in the city council, demanded that Collboni "leave his office and take the lead to face the serious security crisis" he believes the city is experiencing. He criticised the mayor for what he described as "propaganda photos as if nothing was happening" despite the recent violence.
"We need the mayor to explain what he is doing to resolve this situation," Martí stated. "We need him to lead the city, and if he is not capable of leading and providing answers to the public, he should step aside and let other people more capable than him take over."
Weekend of Violence
The weekend saw multiple violent acts, including stabbings, brawls, and the use of firearms. One incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday into Sunday when a young man was injured in a group knife attack at the Fòrum. This coincided with the large crowds attending the Feria de Abril celebrations.
Another serious event took place on 24 April, when a man survived after being shot seven times in the Sants-Montjuïc district. According to reports, the man shot in Sants is linked to the "Los 30/30" gang and another attempted murder in the Dominican Republic.
Junts' demands highlight growing concerns over public safety in Barcelona. The party is pressing for immediate and visible leadership from the mayor's office to restore confidence among residents and address the escalating crime rates.
