In Catalonia, Junts per Catalunya has challenged Partido Popular leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo to travel to Waterloo, Belgium, to discuss a no-confidence motion against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The party says Feijóo must speak directly with Carles Puigdemont if the PP has a serious proposal.

Jordi Turull, Junts secretary general, made the comments in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio. He rejected the idea of the PP sending an emissary to Puigdemont’s residence, saying that a serious offer should be explained face to face by the person leading it.

Junts has made a similar demand before. A year ago, after the Santos Cerdán case, the party asked the PP to travel to Waterloo as part of contacts Feijóo had planned, and that condition stalled the talks.

Turull also said Junts does not want to prop up either the PP or the PSOE in the Congress of Deputies. He said the party will be equally demanding with both main Spanish parties. The Socialists travelled to Belgium in 2023 to negotiate Sánchez’s investiture, although Sánchez did not attend.

Junts says the current legislature is exhausted and wants Sánchez to stop governing by decree and call early general elections. Turull’s position is in line with the Basque Nationalist Party, which has also started calling for early elections, although it does not support joining a no-confidence motion with the PP and Vox.
