PSC Names New Lead Candidate for Tarragona
Ione Montalvo, the managing director of the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) in Camp de Tarragona and head of Joan XXIII Hospital, will lead the Socialists’ Party of Catalonia (PSC) list in Tarragona for the upcoming general election on 29 November. This marks a shift for the PSC, which is fielding a candidate without prior political experience. Montalvo replaces Valle Mellado, who last week announced he would not stand again. Reus-born Andreu Martín will retain his position as number two on the list.
Medical Leader Enters Politics
Montalvo holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and specialises in anaesthesiology, resuscitation, and pain therapy. She also has a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and another in Management of Healthcare Institutions. Her professional career has been closely tied to Joan XXIII Hospital, where she has worked since 2009. Her appointment reflects the PSC’s strategy of promoting figures from public service backgrounds ahead of the November vote. The official list of candidates has not yet been formally published by the electoral commission, but the PSC’s internal decision has been confirmed by multiple outlets including Diari de Tarragona and Diari Més.
