Girona is the focus of new wildfire prevention work as the Catalan government strengthens measures in neighbourhoods that border forested areas. The initiative covers urban-forest interfaces in Girona Nord, Taialà, el Polvorí, Font de la Pólvora and la Creueta, according to officials.

The work is aimed at reducing the risk of forest fires spreading into built-up areas. It brings forest management closer to the city edge, with the aim of protecting residents, homes, roads and other infrastructure.

These interventions are designed to create safer buffer zones between woodland and housing. They include vegetation management to help slow the spread of flames from wildland into residential areas.

The Generalitat says the action reflects the close link between urban development and natural spaces in parts of Catalonia where wildfire risk is a recurring concern. By managing these interfaces, authorities hope to improve community safety and reduce the chance of major damage.
