€2.5m Plan to Modernise Girona’s Sports Infrastructure
The Ajuntament de Girona will invest €2.5 million in upgrading key municipal sports facilities between 2026 and 2029. The project, confirmed by city officials and the Department of Sport of the Generalitat de Catalunya, aims to improve safety, accessibility, sustainability, and service quality across several public installations.
Renewal of Football Pitches and Devesa Sports Zone
Work will focus on six municipal football fields and the Devesa sports area. A central component is the replacement of artificial turf at Pont Major (11-a-side), Fontajau (11-a-side), and Can Gibert del Pla (7-a-side) pitches, costing an estimated €1.154 million. The current surfaces have exceeded their operational lifespan and will be fully renewed, including base adaptation, updated field markings, installation of infill compliant with EU microplastics regulations, and replacement of damaged drainage channels. Additional improvements include upgrading goalposts and switching lighting to energy-efficient LED systems across the targeted pitches.
Funding Split Between City and Regional Government
The total project cost is estimated at €2,545,000. Half of the funding, €1,250,000, comes from a grant by the Consell Català de l’Esport under its 2025–2029 emergency plan for public sports infrastructure. The remaining €1,295,000 will be provided directly by the Girona city council.
Timeline and Planning Phase
While the works are scheduled to begin in phases from 2026 to 2029, 2026 will primarily be dedicated to drafting technical projects.
