Girona is under a Civil Protection alert for intense rainfall from Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest weather expected across the north-east of Catalonia. The INUNCAT flood risk plan has been activated in an alert phase.

The Catalan Meteorological Service says the most intense period is expected between Thursday lunchtime and 8pm. The forecast includes thunderstorms and, in some places, hailstones.

Rainfall could exceed 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes across large parts of Catalonia. The Alt Empordà and Berguedà areas are expected to see the heaviest short bursts of rain. Other areas, including Garrotxa, Lluçanès, Osona and Ripollès, could receive more than 60 litres per square metre over three hours, especially in the afternoon.

Civil Protection is advising residents to clear drains and gutters, secure loose outdoor items and avoid driving through flooded areas. People are also being told to follow official updates and local media for any changes to the forecast or road conditions.

The INUNCAT activation means local authorities and emergency services are on standby to respond to incidents linked to the rain. That includes monitoring river levels and preparing for possible local flooding in both urban and rural areas.
