Girona Steps Up Flood Prevention Ahead of Heavy Rain

The Ajuntament de Girona has intensified cleaning operations on public streets and cleared manholes at key locations across the city, including the Països Catalans, Barcelona, and Salt roundabouts, in anticipation of heavy rainfall forecast for Sunday 4 October 2026. These measures aim to prevent flooding and ensure stormwater drainage systems function effectively. As a precaution, the city council has suspended all outdoor activities, particularly affecting sports events, and cordoned off access points to riverbeds and low-lying areas to prevent public access. The Oficina de Turisme, sports pavilions, and cultural facilities such as the Museu d'Història de Girona will remain closed for the day.

University and Municipal Services Suspended

The Universitat de Girona has suspended all campus activities, including library and sports services, and advised the community to follow guidance from Protecció Civil. The university confirmed that normal operations will resume from Monday, 5 October. Protecció Civil has activated its emergency phase of the Inuncat flood plan, urging restrictions on all non-essential movement across 20 comarcas, including all of Girona province, from 20:00 on Saturday 3 October until 14:00 on Sunday. An ES-Alert will be issued to high-risk zones to warn of dangerous weather conditions.

  • Rotondas affected: Països Catalans, Barcelona, and Plaça de Salt
  • Closed facilities: Museu d'Història de Girona, sports pavilions, tourism office
  • Suspended: Outdoor sports, cultural events, university services
  • Next update: Services resume Monday 5 October

Several other municipalities have taken similar action. Caldes de Malavella has cancelled its Fira de l'Aigua, while Riudellots de la Selva has postponed its town festival. Salt has also cancelled its weekend cistell (basket) fair.

The safety of residents is our priority. We urge people to avoid riverbeds and low-lying areas and to follow official updates.

Cicle de l'Aigua del Ter, SA (CATSA), the public water company responsible for drainage in Girona, has already completed 60% of its annual cleaning target, which includes 13,000 manholes and 8,000 linear metres of storm drain grates, in line with previous years' schedules.
