€386,000 for Structural and Archaeological Work
The Diputació de Lleida will invest €386,239.28 in restoring Orcau Castle, a degraded medieval fortress in the municipality of Isona i Conca Dellà. The project aims to consolidate surviving structures and partially recover the original volume of the fortress. Works will include reinstating sections of wall and stabilising standing masonry, with targeted repairs to cracks and coping stones. Alongside architectural restoration, an extensive archaeological excavation inside the enclosure is planned to uncover former floor levels and internal structures.
This intervention allows us to act on remains that still reveal the structure of a fortress central to territorial control in Conca Dellà.
The dig will help complete the delimitation of the site and provide new insights into the castle’s construction phases over the centuries. Officials stress the goal extends beyond preservation, to improve historical interpretation of the site.
A Fortress on the Rock
Orcau Castle sits atop a hill at 887 metres above sea level and is one of the key medieval heritage sites in Conca Dellà. First documented in 1010 as "castro Orcall", it was sold in the mid-11th century by Count Ramon V of Pallars Jussà to Arnau Mir de Tost and his wife Arsenda. The fortress follows a 'castell roquer' design, using the natural rock formation as part of its defensive system. Its main enclosure is nearly square with circular corner towers, and was once surrounded by a second walled perimeter encompassing much of the hilltop. Remnants of walls, towers, and a walled medieval settlement between the castle and the current village of Orcau are still visible.
Church Frescoes Now Held at MNAC
The fortified complex also includes the ruins of the former church of Mare de Déu de la Pietat, originally dedicated to Santa Maria. This 11th-century Romanesque single-nave church now retains only its apse and parts of the north wall after the collapse of its vault and south façade in 1962. Military structures and trenches built during the Spanish Civil War contributed to the building’s deterioration. However, some Romanesque frescoes from the apse were preserved and are now held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), including fragments depicting apostles typical of Pyrenean Romanesque art.
Historical Significance and Protection
The barony of Orcau once extended across several settlements including Conques, Figuerola d’Orcau, and Castelltallat. Notable figure Arnau d’Orcau served as steward to King Pere III and governed Roussillon and Cerdanya between 1366 and 1376. The title later passed to the Erill family and eventually the Dukes of Híxar. Today, the castle and surrounding fortifications are protected heritage assets. Together with the castles of Llordà and Abella, Orcau Castle dominated this sector of Pallars Jussà. Cristina Morón, the councillor for Technical Services, said the restoration aligns with broader efforts to preserve and rehabilitate heritage castles under the Diputació’s care. She highlighted that combining conservation with archaeological research opens new avenues for understanding the site’s internal organisation and long history spanning over a thousand years.
