Aliança Catalana has formally opposed the proposed relocation of a Muslim prayer space to Plaça del Timó in l’Estartit and is demanding detailed documentation from the Ajuntament de Torroella de Montgrí. The party’s legal team, led by Aurora Fornos, will formally question the council to verify the urban planning compliance of the project. Residents supported by the party say they are still awaiting official responses to earlier information requests about the move. Aliança Catalana insists the council must publish all relevant urban planning documents and clarify the conditions under which the religious centre would operate. The proposed site is a former hamburger shop just over 100 metres from the community’s current prayer hall on Avinguda Roma. On 5 August, La Vanguardia reported that the council had issued a favourable urban compatibility certificate for the site. However, some local residents and business owners have raised concerns about noise, parking, footfall, and the mix of nightlife venues with a place of worship.

Concerns Over Nightlife and Residential Coexistence

Plaça del Timó has long been the heart of l’Estartit’s nightlife, with bars and clubs on Carrer Eivissa, Montgó, Coral and Avinguda Roma. In 2018, the council approved a special urban plan to balance leisure and residential use, setting acoustic limits, safety rules and accessibility requirements. A five-year grace period was granted for businesses to adapt. By August 2020, ongoing disturbances led the council to shorten opening hours for night venues to 1:30 a.m., following a violent incident that required police intervention and left several officers with minor injuries. In April 2026, the council reaffirmed its commitment to improving conduct in the area, particularly after incidents involving political groups.

The current activity in Plaça del Timó is totally incompatible with the family-friendly tourism model the town is promoting.

Jordi Colomí, mayor of Torroella de Montgrí, stated in a 2024 meeting with business owners that nightlife activities must now comply fully with the 2018 regulations. He stressed that failure to do so could result in restricted operations.

Wider Services Debate Raised

Aliança Catalana has also linked its opposition to broader concerns about public services in l’Estartit. While the town has its own medical clinic, residents must travel to Torroella de Montgrí for full CAP services. Similarly, secondary education is provided at the Institut Montgrí in Torroella. The party argues that urban decisions like this should be weighed against ongoing gaps in local infrastructure. The council’s urban planning department maintains that all development projects must meet technical, accessibility, safety and hygiene standards set by the Generalitat, and that final approval for places of worship requires additional permits beyond a compatibility certificate. Residents and interested parties may consult the municipal urban planning portal for current regulations and submit inquiries via the electronic citizen's office.
