In Girona, a doctor and two midwives at Santa Caterina Hospital are facing prosecution over alleged medical negligence linked to a baby being born with a 96% disability. The child, Aisatu, was born in November 2019 with moderate neonatal asphyxia secondary to partial placental abruption, according to court documents.

The condition led to severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, leaving Aisatu with a 96% disability, officially recognised by the Catalan administration. The child is now dependent on a machine and will require total care from another person throughout her life.

The Plaza 4 Instruction Section of the Girona Court of First Instance believes the disability stems from alleged poor practice during the birth. The court has processed charges against the doctor and two midwives who attended the mother, Kumba Drammeh.

The specific details of the alleged negligence have not yet been fully disclosed. The case will examine the actions of the medical staff involved and whether their conduct directly caused Aisatu’s condition.

The prosecution will seek to establish the extent of the medical professionals’ responsibility. For readers following legal and public health cases in Catalonia, related coverage is available on our news tag page.
