Forest management work to reduce wildfire risk has started between Girona and Celrà, in Catalonia. Local officials say the project covers 90 hectares and is intended to protect about 150,000 residents.
The work includes selective clearing to create a confinement axis, a strategic firebreak designed to slow or stop the spread of forest fires. It involves removing undergrowth and thinning trees to reduce the amount of fuel available if a blaze starts.
The main aim is to protect the communities of Girona and Celrà, along with nearby homes and infrastructure. Authorities say the measure is part of a wider effort to limit the impact of large wildfires in areas with high fire risk.
Similar forest management programmes have been carried out across Catalonia in recent years, especially after periods of drought and higher fire danger. The current work fits into that broader regional approach to improving fire resilience.
Officials will monitor the results and decide whether further interventions are needed. For more Catalonia-wide local news, see our news coverage.
