Girona was the setting for a conference on Catalan language rights in healthcare, organised by the association Salut pel Català at Casa de Cultura. The event looked at the challenges of using Catalan in hospitals and health centres across Catalonia.
Salut pel Català said new medical residents need clear reception plans that include a sufficient level of Catalan so they can work effectively. The association said this matters for patient care and for the integration of new staff.
The discussion also raised communication barriers between healthcare professionals and patients who mainly speak Catalan. According to the association, weak language skills among some new staff can lead to misunderstandings and affect the quality of care.
Participants included healthcare professionals, language experts and patient advocates. They shared experiences and put forward ideas to improve linguistic integration in the health system. For more on related coverage, see our news page.
Salut pel Català said it plans to present its findings and recommendations to the Catalan health department. The group wants stronger language policies and training support for healthcare staff, especially new arrivals, across the region.
