In Girona, Salut pel Català has urged authorities to make sure new healthcare professionals have enough Catalan to speak with patients. The group says people should be able to be attended to in Catalan in the public health system.

The call was made on Saturday morning during a conference at the Casa de Cultura de Girona, where around 60 people attended. The event also introduced the Territorial Dynamisation Group, a new structure set up to promote language initiatives in healthcare centres across the Girona region.

Salut pel Català says the issue is about both patient care and the place of Catalan in public services. The organisation argues that clear communication in Catalan is important for quality healthcare and for maintaining the language’s status in the health system.

The new Territorial Dynamisation Group will work directly with local healthcare facilities. Its aim is to support actions that encourage the use of Catalan among staff, especially those who have recently arrived in the area.

Looking ahead, Salut pel Català plans to work with local health boards and educational institutions. The group wants reception plans that include Catalan language training for incoming healthcare professionals in Girona and elsewhere.
