Airport emergency plan officially homologated
Protecció Civil has formally approved the self-protection plan for Girona-Costa Brava Airport in Vilobí d'Onyar. The decision was made on Friday, 4 September 2026, during a meeting of Catalonia’s Commission for Self-Protection. This makes the airport the only facility in the Girona region to receive plan approval in this round. The approval ensures the airport meets regional emergency preparedness standards for handling risks such as fires, industrial accidents or large-scale disruptions.
42 safety plans approved across Catalonia
In total, 42 self-protection plans were approved across Catalonia during the session. Most apply to permanent facilities, with over half located in the Barcelona region. Other major sites approved include the Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, the Magic Badalona shopping centre, and La Farga activity centre in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Three major reservoirs, La Baells, La Llosa del Cavall and El Foix, have also had their emergency plans validated, along with the Oliana tunnels and several industrial, educational and energy infrastructure sites.
The commission has also approved plans for temporary events including festivals, concerts, fireworks displays and the Cirque du Soleil event in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
20 applications rejected over technical flaws
Twenty other self-protection plans were rejected due to technical deficiencies or insufficient emergency response resources. Three of these came from the Girona region. The rejections highlight ongoing challenges in ensuring all high-risk facilities meet minimum safety thresholds under European regulations on major industrial accident prevention. Since the start of 2026, Protecció Civil has approved nearly 300 self-protection plans through eight commission meetings. Facilities are required to keep these plans updated and subject to periodic review under Catalan civil protection rules.
