The Catalan government, Lleida Provincial Council, and eight local councils have signed an agreement to invest €18.4 million in upgrading three major road sections in Garrigues Altes. This long-awaited improvement project is expected to be completed by 2028.
The works will focus on three distinct road axes. One involves rehabilitating and converting the current track between Torrebesses and Castelldans into a Generalitat-owned road. Another project will improve the C-233 road connecting La Granadella and El Soleràs, which will then transfer to the Provincial Council's ownership.
Local Demands and Road Ownership
The third axis includes the rehabilitation of the track between Bellaguarda and Els Torms. While the Provincial Council will maintain this section for five years, local municipalities are pushing for it to become a supramunicipal road, indicating a desire for long-term regional ownership and maintenance.
Mayors from Torrebesses and Castelldans have also called for the construction of new bypasses around their towns. These additional variants would help alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety for residents, according to local officials.
