Garriguella, in Alt Empordà, has opened a new viewpoint dedicated to the 380 bunkers of the Pyrenees Line. The site is now part of Catalonia’s Network of Memory Spaces, with the aim of preserving the memory of the post-war period and the Franco dictatorship.
The museum-style balcony is on the C-252 road. It forms part of the military infrastructure known as Line P, built across the Pyrenees between 1944 and 1957. The defensive system was designed to protect the Spanish border from a hypothetical foreign invasion.
Ramon Espadaler, the Minister of Justice and Democratic Quality, attended the inauguration. He said memorials of this kind help pass democratic values on to younger generations.
The Pyrenees Line, also known as Line P, included hundreds of bunkers and other defensive structures. They were built during a period of international uncertainty after World War II, when Spain under Franco sought to secure its borders.
The fortifications were never used in combat, but they remain a visible reminder of that era. The new viewpoint adds a public place for reflection on this part of Catalonia’s history.
