The Generalitat has awarded a €3.6 million contract to improve 13 kilometres of the C-153 between l'Esquirol and Rupit i Pruit, in Barcelona province. Drivers using this route should expect roadworks from October 2026 for an expected four months while the surface, safety barriers, signs and roadside marker systems are renewed.

The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition said the project will address deteriorated road surfacing on the section between the two municipalities.

“These road maintenance and conservation works are very relevant to improving safety and driving conditions,” said Sílvia Paneque, the Generalitat's Minister for Territory.

Surface and roadside safety systems to be renewed

According to the Generalitat statement reported by Europa Press on 22 August, the contract includes:

  • repairing the worn road surface;
  • laying a new wearing course, the upper layer of the carriageway;
  • adapting vehicle restraint systems; and
  • updating road signs and checking delineators, the roadside markers that guide drivers.

The C-153 works will complement maintenance already under way between Vic and l'Esquirol. Before the Bracons tunnel opened, the road was the main connection between Vic and Olot.

The Generalitat said it plans to spend almost €50 million on maintaining Catalonia's roads during 2026, covering more than 300 kilometres of the network. Motorists travelling between l'Esquirol and Rupit i Pruit during the October-to-February work period should allow for activity on the 13-kilometre section.
