Esplugues de Llobregat has declared two days of mourning after a woman died following a street attack in the Finestrelles neighbourhood on Saturday morning. The town council has also called for a public gathering on Monday at 6pm in front of the town hall to condemn the violent crime.
Mayor Eduard Sanz expressed his condolences to the victim's family and friends, as well as to another injured person. In a social media message, Sanz stated: "Violence has no place in our city. We will always defend coexistence, safety, and respect."
Sanz also highlighted the "rapid action of two local police officers" who were the first to arrive at the scene. He also praised the Mossos d'Esquadra for quickly apprehending the alleged perpetrator.
Community Response and Call for Prudence
The town council will provide all necessary cooperation, according to Sanz. He also urged "prudence, responsibility, and respect, avoiding the spread of unverified information." The mayor concluded, "Esplugues will respond with serenity, unity, and firmness: alongside those affected, against any form of violence, and with a commitment to continue working for safety and coexistence in our city."
Emergency services received a call around 11am reporting a man assaulting a woman on Joan Miró street, with the attacker then fleeing. Mossos d'Esquadra and the Medical Emergency System (SEM) units attended the scene, but they could not save the woman's life. The Mossos later located and arrested the man in Barcelona.
