A bus driver was arrested in La Pineda, Vila-seca, this week after police found him driving under the influence of alcohol and without a seatbelt, with six passengers on board. The incident occurred on Friday, around 7.45pm, during a routine police check.
Mossos d'Esquadra officers stopped the bus, which was travelling towards Tarragona, as part of a Catalan Traffic Service operation focusing on passive safety measures, such as seatbelt use. Officers noticed the driver was not wearing his seatbelt and suspected he had consumed alcohol due to his speech.
Driver Exceeds Alcohol Limit
The driver underwent an alcohol test, which showed a reading of 0.81 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air. This level is more than five times the legal limit for professional drivers in Catalonia, which is 0.15 mg/l, according to the Diari de Tarragona. Given the serious infractions and the risk to the passengers, officers arrested the driver on charges of a crime against road safety.
Following the arrest, the bus company arranged for a replacement driver to complete the route. The six passengers were then taken to their destinations.
