Capel takes seat after Martínez steps down

Dídac Capel has been sworn in as a new municipal councillor for the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) in Figueres, following the resignation of Sabrina Martínez. Capel, who was fifth on the PSC-CP list during the 2023 municipal elections, officially assumes her seat on the town council. According to Gerió Digital, Capel has long been involved with the socialist project in the Alt Empordà city and expressed both excitement and regret at the circumstances of his appointment. "I'm very pleased, although I'm sorry it's because Sabrina has stepped down," said Capel, who highlighted his ongoing collaboration with the party’s executive and municipal group across both government and opposition roles.

Local roots and civic engagement

Capel will serve alongside fellow PSC councillors Pere Casellas and Alfons Martínez, from whom he said he hopes to learn during his time in office. Professionally, Capel has worked in tax and accounting consultancy for the past decade. His civic involvement in Figueres dates back to his youth, including nine years in leadership roles within the local scouting movement, where he served as group leader and treasurer. He has also coordinated community events such as Sant Jordi, L'Embarraca't, and the Local Youth Council. His entry into the council coincides with his recent return to the Turó-Nova Estació neighbourhood, where he lived for much of his life. He now serves on the recently reactivated residents' association for the area. Capel described this role as essential for understanding residents’ concerns firsthand and conveying them to the PSC municipal group. The association, known as AViC (Associació de Veïns i Comerciants de la Plaça de l’Estació de Figueres), was re-established in 2010 by residents concerned about public safety and has since promoted cultural and community activities in the district.
