Participants in the Correllengua Agermanat relay race continued their journey across Catalonia on 20 April 2026, pushing through severe hailstorms as they carried the flame of the Catalan language towards Oliana and Girona.
The relay, which began in Prada, France, and travels from north to south, saw its participants near La Seu d'Urgell surprised by a heavy hailstorm. Despite the challenging conditions, runners pressed on, with organisers declaring, "No avortem missió!" (We are not aborting the mission!).
The Correllengua Agermanat involves two main routes, both affected by the adverse weather. One route is set to conclude in Oliana, in the Alt Urgell region, while the other will reach Girona later today.
Girona Event Adapts to Conditions
In Girona, the arrival of the flame, scheduled for 7.20pm, will proceed as planned with a manifesto reading and the traditional Àliga dance. However, due to the rain, the event has been relocated indoors to the porch of Escola Eiximenis.
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC) issued a weather warning for 20 April, indicating a possibility of hail exceeding two centimetres. This warning primarily affects the Berguedà region, with no specific alerts issued for Alt Urgell or Gironès.
The determination shown by the Correllengua Agermanat participants underscores the event's commitment to promoting the Catalan language and culture, even in the face of significant weather challenges.
