Barcelona province residents and workers are being advised to use telework where possible during Pope Leo XIV’s visit, as Catalonia’s Civil Protection agency prepares to activate the Procicat alert over expected mobility disruption.

The Generalitat’s recommendation applies to people who live and work in Barcelona province, those who live there but travel elsewhere for work, and those who live outside the province but work inside it. Businesses and workers are being asked to plan organisational measures, including remote work if they have the technical capacity.

Civil Protection will base its coordination at the Emergency Coordination Centre of Catalonia, known as CECAT. It will also link with police coordination centres, Barcelona City Council’s coordination centre, and the Montserrat Mountain centre, with staff from transport, telecommunications, emergency and security services present.

For official updates on the visit, readers should follow the Generalitat and Civil Protection channels, and check the latest Catalonia news on this site for continuing coverage.

The agency also issued guidance for people planning to attend papal events. Attendees should check official sources for times, locations and access points, as some events require prior accreditation. They are advised to use public transport or walk to designated public areas, and to arrive early.

Civil Protection says people should wear comfortable clothing and footwear, protect themselves from the heat with light clothing, a hat and sun protection, carry water in plastic bottles, and drink regularly. It also advises groups to agree a meeting point, to identify emergency exits on arrival, to carry identification, and to follow instructions from security staff and authorities. The emergency number is 112.
