Catalonia has launched a new aid programme to help property owners remove asbestos, known as Uralita, from buildings across the region. The measure is part of ongoing work to reduce the risks linked to asbestos in the built environment.
Central Catalonia has a high number of buildings affected. In Manresa, the fifth Catalan city with the most tonnes of asbestos in roofs, a government census carried out two years ago identified 1,227 roofs containing asbestos in the Bages capital.
The material poses health risks, which is why the programme is aimed at supporting individuals and communities that need to remove it safely. Asbestos, also referred to as fibrocement in this context, was widely used in construction for decades.
The government says the aid should speed up removal work and make buildings safer for residents and the public. Details on how to apply, and the eligibility criteria, are expected soon.
