The Catalan Parliament in Barcelona will debate motions next Wednesday on teacher pay, school conditions and alleged police infiltration of a teacher assembly, as education unions continue strike action over pay and working conditions.

One motion, proposed by Junts, calls for a “good agreement” with teacher unions. It would include a multi-year plan to improve salaries and working conditions, reduce student-teacher ratios, and add support professionals in all schools.

The same proposal also seeks to cut bureaucracy for educational centres, “institutionally protect the public authority of teachers”, and keep Catalan as the main language of instruction.

A second Junts motion asks the Parliament to condemn the alleged infiltration of Mossos d'Esquadra officers into a teacher assembly. Junts says the practice affects freedom of assembly, association and expression, and has not led to political accountability.

Both motions are due to be debated and voted on next Wednesday, while talks continue between the Catalan government and teacher unions. For more Catalonia-wide political coverage, see our news page.
