Barcelona's iconic Boqueria Market will undergo renovation, with some stalls temporarily relocating to a marquee in Plaça de la Gardunya before the Rambla reform concludes in spring 2027, city officials announced.
The extensive Boqueria Market renovation will proceed in phases, with stalls moving by sector to a 'small-sized' marquee, according to Raquel Gil, the city councillor for Commerce and Markets. Councillor Gil explained in an interview with 'Bon dia, Barcelona' that a full market relocation is "impossible" due to its size.
The initial phase will focus on the central section and the fish stalls, which are considered the most urgent. A key objective of the works is to open the market more towards El Raval district, creating a new access point from Plaça de la Gardunya and improving passageways to connect the market more easily with the square.
Councillor Gil stated that the market will not be "100% remodelled" but rather updated in stages, addressing areas that have become "obsolete and uncomfortable for stallholders". Future phases include removing the fibrocement roof and improving enclosures, air conditioning, and accessibility.
Shifting Focus to Traditional Produce
The renovation plans align with a decision made by stallholders in September, who approved reforms aimed at revitalising the market and making it less tourist-centric. They stipulated that at least half of the market's offerings must be traditional, prioritising fresh produce, charcuterie, fish, bakery items, and restaurants.
This initiative seeks to reduce the prevalence of fast food options primarily aimed at tourists. Plaça de la Gardunya, the temporary location for some stalls, is known for its frequent presence of gulls, leading to the installation of side-opening bins designed to prevent the birds from scattering rubbish.
The municipal government is currently working on the tender processes for the works. While some changes are expected to be visible by spring 2027, coinciding with the completion of the Rambla reform, Councillor Gil clarified that the renovation will continue throughout 2027 and 2028.
