Lleida police are investigating after the bodies of a man and a woman were found in waterways in the province on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. The man was found at the Utxesa reservoir in Aitona, and the woman was recovered from the Segre river in Lleida city.

The two discoveries were made within five hours of each other. Officials said late yesterday afternoon that formal identification was still pending. Investigators did not see any external signs of criminality in either case.

Mossos d'Esquadra officers were alerted at 11:20am to a body floating in the Seròs canal at the Utxesa reservoir gates in Aitona. A maintenance technician for the infrastructure found the man's body. Police said it was in an advanced state of decomposition, which suggests he had been dead for several days.

Later, at 3:54pm, emergency services received an alert about a body floating in the Segre river in Lleida city, near the Instituts area. Patrols from Mossos d'Esquadra and Guàrdia Urbana attended the scene, along with Generalitat Firefighters and ambulances from the Medical Emergency System. The body was removed from the river and the person was confirmed dead.

The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened investigations into both deaths to clarify the circumstances. The bodies were taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Lleida for autopsies, and police are also checking whether either person had been reported missing. The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) reminded the public on Monday that swimming is prohibited near dams, canals and ponds. It said these areas can have strong currents and whirlpools that may drag swimmers under, and advised people to use only official bathing areas at the start of the season. The CHE also warned that river sections with hydroelectric power stations can see sudden changes in water flow because of turbine operations.
